Many digital cameras have a panorama feature that allows a number of pictures to be taken and digitally stitched together to create an extra-wide image This feature can be very handy for creating the required images Another option is to use a computer application to create the skybox image One application that can help with this is Planetside Software s Terragen Classic application (see http://wwwplanetsidecouk/content/view/16/28/ for details), which allows a variety of realisticlooking earth scenes to be created, including skies, terrain, and water These scenes can then be rendered into images with the camera looking north, south, east, and west; and combined together to make an artificially generated skybox image A good tutorial that explains how this can be achieved can be found at http://www3dradcom/forum/indexphp topic=30020 After the images have been saved, they can be manually stitched together to create the sky scene.

When doing work to remove duplicate entries from a table with a significant number of rows, adding Tip a temporary, non-unique index on the columns in question can often speed up operations as you go about removing duplicate entries.

Before moving on to TourModelGL, I ll demonstrate the OBJLoader package by using it inside a simple model display application, ModelLoaderGL (shown in action in Figure 17-1). ModelLoaderGL utilizes the callback coding approach, described in 15 and illustrated by Figure 17-5.

When retrieving a set of unique results from a table containing duplicate entries, you must first decide which of the records you want to keep. In this situation, let s assume that we re going to keep the rows having the highest rowID value, and we ll discard the rest of the rows containing an identical URL.

The model is scaled and centered at the origin. The canvas s listener is ModelLoaderGLListener (a subclass of GLEventListener), and the canvas s display is updated by an FPSAnimator instance using fixed-rate scheduling. The simplicity of the application is reflected in the class diagrams for ModelLoaderGL in Figure 17-6 (only the public methods are listed).

To make it as easy as possible to use skyboxes, we will integrate a special skybox class into the game framework, allowing us to ensure that it is rendered prior to any other content in the scene. The skybox is created in a new game framework class: MatrixSkyboxObject. The class is derived from MatrixObjectBase and fits into the inheritance hierarchy as shown in Figure 8 17.
